Wings, part 2

Before I begin this tale, let me just say that I like pigeons. I know to many they are “rats with wings”, but to me they are “doves with a bad reputation”.

Last summer after my visit with the Shaman, so many strange things began to occur in my life, both good and bad. This caused a lot of fear to begin to build, and anxiety to mount. One morning, as I was getting dressed I asked the Universe to please send me some sort of sign. Anything to indicate my life was going in the right direction, and that I was safe.

With this in mind, I had just set out to take my beloved dog, Bernard, for a walk when I noticed a group of 6 pigeons that seemed to be hanging around us. I laughed at myself thinking, “That’s insane.” and crossed the street.

As we crossed, the six birds followed us to the other side and were joined by six more of their feathered friends. They were all facing Bernard and me in a semi-circle, arcing out into the street. I slowly started to take a few steps forward and they followed on foot. I stopped and turned to them and suddenly a thirteenth, solid white pigeon appeared. It took to the air and started flying around us in a circle getting a little too close for comfort (it was at this point that a Tippi Hedren inspired terror kicked in). But the white pigeon finally landed, and as Bernard and I proceeded with our walk we were accompanied by 13 little bird-guardians. I became curious as to how long this would go on: when I crossed the street again, they did, too. When I turned right onto Jane Street, we did it en masse.

It was not until I decided to head home that the group began to disband. Four pigeons followed us all the way back to my block, and the white one accompanied me all the way home: even hopping up the stairs along side me as I made my way to the front door of the building.

I was just stunned. Even more so because this flock of birds hadn’t seemed to bother Bernard at all. I immediately googled “Pigeon as symbol” and found that : Dove/Pigeon’s gifts include – bringer of peace and love, understanding of gentleness, spirit messenger, communication between the two worlds, maternity, femininity, prophecy.

Well, then. It was obvious that I had to commemorate this experience with a piece of jewelry. I ended up carving a very clean and simple piece; a classic signet ring with a wing intaglio. When I wear it I think of birds, angels, divine messages and protection- it’s become a favorite talisman.
